Dominic whined the whole way back to the resort. Hali kept her attention on him, leaving Gray to constantly scan the beach behind them for signs of movement or an incoming enemy.

“You ruined my night,” the trivia guru groused when they dropped him off at his door. “I was about to get lucky.”

“She was too young for you,” Gray shot back. “Start fishing in age-appropriate waters, and I’ll leave you alone.”

Dominic scowled. “You know, I find it rich that you’re screwing with my love life when you have this queen at your side.” He beamed at Hali. “He’s mean. He’s got his and wants to keep others from getting what they deserve. Perhaps you would like to trade up.”

Hali blinked several times and then pasted a fake smile on her face. “I think I’m good.”

“Of course you are.” Dominic made an exasperated sound in the base of his throat. “This sucks. Next time I go to an event, I’m going to make sure that nobody there is more attractive than me. I’m not going through this again.”

That struck Hali as legitimately funny, and she let loose a giggle. “Somehow I think you’re going to survive.”

“Whatever.”

Once they were reasonably assured Dominic was locked away for the night and not liable to leave—there was no controlling him should he decide he needed to pick someone up, so they refused to focus on it—the couple headed to the villa. Hali slipped her hand in his for the walk, Gray picking a deliberately slow pace.

“I’m okay,” she said to him in a low voice when she noticed exactly how slow their progress was. “You don’t have to worry about me.”

Gray lifted one shoulder in a haphazard shrug. “I happen to think it’s a beautiful night. Why not enjoy it?”

“We could be enjoying it more in bed.”

“We have time.” He kept a firm hold on her hand and scanned the beach before taking the turn on the side walkway that led to her home. “How is your hip?”

She bit back a sigh, but just barely. “I don’t like talking about my hip.”

“I know, but I happen to like you, and your hip is attached to you.”

“You just like swooping in and being a hero.”

“That too.” He refused to get into an argument with her. He also refused to pretend there wasn’t an issue. “I care about you, Hali. I don’t like seeing you in pain. It’s not in my nature to ignore that pain. That means we’re going to be talking about the hip going forward.”

Hali’s scowl was pronounced. “I don’t like looking weak.”

“I know. For the record, you couldn’t look weak even if you tried. You’re one of the strongest people I know. Your hip does not make you weak.” He was calm when he leveled his gaze on her. “I hate thinking you’re in pain. I can’t help it.”

She sighed and shook her head. “It’s just worse at night. I barely feel it when I wake up.”

He knew that wasn’t true. He also knew she wasn’t at a place where she was ready to talk about it.
